Give Back with FVIA!!

As fall draws to a close and winter’s snow is on the wind’s fingertips, it seems the whole world prepares for the cold months. We prepare for holiday feasts, buy gifts for loved ones, and sit by roaring fire places. Bundling up for winter sports goes without saying.

We at Fox Valley Ice Arena have our own traditions. Every year we ‘deck our halls’ to bring out the festive attitude in our guests. The front desk twinkles with white lights. Santa’s sleigh sits in our lobby waiting for the man himself to don his seat and listen to wishes of little boys and girls.

But, of course, the holidays are about so much more than decorating and keeping ourselves jolly. They are time to give back to those less fortunate and to reconnect with friends.

That is why one of our most valued traditions is our partnership with Toys for Tots and Cal’s Angels. Partnered with Lurie Children’s hospital, Cal’s Angels is a local organization that helps bring happiness to those children who are battling pediatric cancer. Not only do they help support families with gas money, lodging and food, but they also supply every pediatric cancer patient with a toy.

Cals-Toy-Drive-Box

One of the ways they do this is through their annual toy drive. The toys they collect last all year long and are given to each child who spends the night at one of Lurie’s hospitals. Popular toys include Barbies and other dolls, craft supplies, legos, vetch toys, playdough and action figures.

Fox Valley Ice Arena is again hosting a box for people to donate to this organization. If interested in giving back, stop by the front desk to drop off your toy and to show our appreciation we will give you a Buy One Get One Public Skate pass for an upcoming public skate.

Fox Valley Skaters Compete at Sectionals

Sectionals, November 17-18 2017
Bloomington, Minnesota

Last week four skaters from the Fox Valley Ice Arena laced up their skates and competed in the US Sectionals competition in Bloomington, Minnesota. Traveling with coach, Rockne Brubaker, the two pairs prepared to compete for their mutual goals: to qualify for the National Championships in their respective categories.

In the Junior Category:
Laiken Lockley (15) and Keenan Prochnow (19) have been training with Stefania Berton and Rockne Brubaker at the Fox Valley Ice Arena since 2015. Lockley and Prochnow work hard to find time to practice in their busy schedule. Lockley juggles school work and training for pairs skating with Prochnow and single skating. Prochnow, a dedicated skater, works three jobs to help his mom pay for expenses and skating while training in Geneva.
For Sectionals they prepared two programs; a short program to Claire de Lune by Deboussi and a long program to Les Retrouvailles by Yann Tiersen. Both were choreographed by coaches Stefania and Rockne.
Lockley and Prochnow earned a silver medal and qualified for the National Championships where they will have a chance to fight for their spot in the Junior World US Team.

In the Novice Category:

Isabelle Martins (11) and Ryan Bedard (16) have been training with Stefania Berton and Rockne Brubaker since 2015 at the Fox Valley Ice Arena.
In order to build the necessary muscle mass to perform considerably harder lifts than they had previously performed, Bedard worked with Nick Petrovic, our Fox Valley Fitness Director. Together they trained to prepare Bedard to perform the lifts and ensure the safety of himself and his partner. Meanwhile, Isabelle juggles her time between school and training for both single and pair skating.

At Sectionals they performed a short program to a Michael Jackson medley of ‘Beat It’ and ‘Thriller.’ Their long program was choreographed to the La La Land soundtrack by Justin Juritz.

Martins and Bedard earned a bronze medal at Sectionals and will compete at the National Championships where they will fight for a National Medal.

We at Fox Valley Ice Area are proud of the work both pairs have put in over the past year and are excited to watch them continue to grow as competitors.
